The Northern Arizona University-Yuma Branch Campus has been awarded $600,000 from the National Science Foundation to provide “Opportunities to Advance Students in Science” (OASIS). These OASIS scholarships will support 15-25 students for two years.   Applications will be accepted March 15 - May 1, 2009, for the first cohort, which will begin fall 2009.  Scholarships will be awarded for up to $10,000 per year (based on need). Students can renew the scholarships for a second year based on satisfactory progress and continued funding. Funding is based on nine-month academic years and all recipients will be strongly encouraged to participate in summer internships or summer employment to earn additional valuable experience and resources.

Students will be selected for scholarships through a competitive application process. A rigorous plan of study will be developed for all students. Participants will attend full-time for two years of cohort classes, receiving extra support through a learning community. Beyond the classroom, cohorts will participate in natural history field trips, scientific meetings, internships, and research-related activities.
